What is a Blended Learning Designer?

A Blended Learning Designer is a learning designer who creates learning solutions that include both digital and face-to-face elements.

This flexible approach to learning mixes online learning with in-person training, meaning learners can benefit from accessible digital learning while still experiencing the value of in-person, hands-on sessions. Blended learning often involves learning styles such as self-paced digital elements, instructor-led sessions, or virtual classrooms supplemented with digital resources.

Blended Learning Methodologies

It’s important that blended learning is accessible for learners. Some of the elements that can be incorporated are as follows.

  • Digital tools such as videos, quizzes, simulations, gamified content, and interactive scenarios to increase engagement and portray a realistic learning environment.
  • Collaborative learning activities such as discussion, group interactivity, and live virtual sessions.
  • Formative and summative assessments, real-world tasks, and adaptive learning paths that will measure learner progress.
  • Developing multimedia assets such as eye-catching visuals and animations to improve knowledge retention.
Responsibilities and Key Skills

Blended Learning Designers collaborate closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and other key stakeholders to develop content that aligns with key learning objectives, whether that be soft skills or technical-based learning.

In addition to instructional design, a strong understanding of authoring tools such as Articulate 360, Evolve, Adapt, and any other industry leading tools is beneficial. Having a good understanding Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Learning Experience Platforms (LXP) and standards like SCORM and xAPI helps ensure seamless course delivery.

A strong core understanding of early-stage design is important, however it’s also beneficial to have the ability to develop interactive elements such as video editing, graphic design, and user experience (UX) design using tools like Adobe Creative Suite. The technical and creative combination of both elements allows Blended Learning Designers to develop engaging and effective content.

The role of a Blended Learning Designer requires adaptability, innovation, and a continuous desire to stay updated with new learning technologies and methodologies.
